The Students’ Parliament of Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED) has officially lifted the ban on election activities ahead of the forthcoming Students’ Union Government (SUG) elections.

The decision was announced by the Senate President of the Students House of Senate (SHS), Distinguished Senator Seyi Bakare, during the 10th Joint Sitting of the Parliament, which brought together members of the College Parliaments and the SUG Senators.

The lifting of the ban formally signals the commencement of the electoral season within the Students’ Union, paving the way for the Independent TASFUED Electoral Commission (ITEC) to begin preparations for the next student leadership elections.

Also present at the sitting was the President of the 18th Students’ Union Government, Senator Ogunfowora Shinaayomi, who addressed the Parliament and reflected on the achievements of his administration.

In his address, the SUG President stated that the 18th administration had recorded significant milestones that, in his words, “history will not forget.” He highlighted several accomplishments of the administration, including initiatives in academic welfarism, student welfare, security, infrastructure renovation, scholarship opportunities, and other intervention programmes aimed at improving students’ welfare and campus life.

Looking ahead to the end of his administration, Senator Ogunfowora assured members of the Parliament that the union remains committed to completing a major capital project before handing over to the next administration. According to him, the project will include a central charging station for students’ electronic devices as well as a students’ game centre, both designed to enhance campus life and provide additional recreational and support facilities for students.

He expressed confidence that the projects would be completed before the expiration of the tenure of the 18th Students’ Union Government.

In his closing remarks, the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Seyi Bakare, delivered an emotional address to members of the Parliament. He thanked the outgoing senators for their dedication and service throughout the legislative session while urging aspiring candidates and all political stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully during the forthcoming electioneering period.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, unity and orderliness across the university community, stressing that the electoral process should strengthen rather than divide the student body.

Senator Bakare also expressed profound appreciation to members of the Students House of Senate, the College Parliamentarians and the wider student community for the support they gave the 18th Students’ Union Government, noting that their cooperation contributed significantly to the successes recorded by the administration.

With the ban on election activities now lifted, attention is expected to shift to the Independent TASFUED Electoral Commission (ITEC), which is anticipated to announce the official election timetable, nomination procedures, screening exercise and campaign guidelines in the coming days.
