The ancient city of Oyo is set for another significant moment in its rich traditional history as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, prepares to install renowned banker and philanthropist Oloye (Dr.) Adesola Kazeem Adeduntan as the new Balogun of Oyo.

The installation ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 5, 2026, bringing together traditional rulers, dignitaries, business leaders and members of the Oyo community for one of the kingdom’s most important chieftaincy events.

The ceremony was initially planned for July but was postponed following the tragic abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area. While the victims have since been reunited with their families, the incident claimed two lives, prompting the palace to reschedule the installation.

Dr. Adeduntan will succeed the late Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, the former Governor of the old Oyo State, who held the prestigious title until his passing. Widely respected for his contributions to public service and intellectual excellence, Olunloyo’s tenure as Balogun added further prominence to one of the Oyo Empire’s most distinguished traditional offices.

The title of Balogun of Oyo is among the highest-ranking chieftaincy positions within the Oyo traditional institution. Historically associated with military leadership, bravery and service to the kingdom, the office has evolved into one that recognises exceptional leadership, integrity and contributions to society.

Dr. Adeduntan is well known in Nigeria’s corporate sector, having served as the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FirstBank. Throughout his banking career, he earned recognition for his leadership in financial services, corporate governance and business transformation, while also supporting philanthropic and community development initiatives.

His installation reflects the continued tradition of honouring accomplished individuals whose careers and service have brought distinction to the Oyo Kingdom and Nigeria.

As preparations intensify for the September ceremony, the installation is expected to attract guests from across the country, further highlighting the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in recognising excellence and preserving Yoruba cultural heritage.
