Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal ended Argentina’s title defence as Spain completed a dominant tournament with their second World Cup crown.

Spain have been crowned champions of the world after defeating defending champions Argentina 1–0 in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute as La Roja overcame Lionel Messi’s Argentina after a tense final at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.

The victory delivered Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, 16 years after Andrés Iniesta’s extra-time winner secured the country’s first crown at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

A Final Decided in Extra Time

The highly anticipated final brought together the reigning European champions and the defending world and South American champions.

It was also presented as a meeting between two generations: Argentina captain Lionel Messi, one of the greatest players in football history, and Spain’s young star Lamine Yamal.

However, the match developed into a tactical and physical contest rather than the open attacking battle many supporters expected.

Spain controlled much of the possession, created better opportunities and repeatedly placed Argentina’s defence under pressure. Argentina remained organised but struggled to create meaningful chances against a Spanish side that had been defensively outstanding throughout the competition.

Nico Williams created the opening, supplying Ferran Torres, who finished in the 106th minute to break Argentina’s resistance and place Spain within touching distance of the trophy.

Argentina attempted to respond during the closing stages, but Spain protected their advantage and completed a historic triumph.

Spain’s victory represents more than the result of one final.

La Roja arrived at the tournament as European champions and carried their possession-based football, coordinated pressing and technical discipline onto the global stage.

Their route to the trophy included a controlled 2–0 semifinal victory over France before overcoming Argentina in the final. Spain’s defence was especially impressive, consistently limiting some of the competition’s most dangerous attacking teams.

The triumph also strengthens the reputation of head coach Luis de la Fuente, who has successfully blended established players such as Rodri with a new generation led by Yamal, Pau Cubarsí and other emerging talents.

Argentina’s Title Defence Ends

For Argentina, the defeat brought an emotional end to their attempt to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive men’s World Cup titles.

The South American champions reached the final with several members of the team that lifted the trophy in Qatar in 2022. They also entered the game with Messi still serving as the creative and emotional centre of the side.

But against Spain, Argentina struggled to establish their attacking rhythm.

The defeat will inevitably raise fresh questions about Messi’s international future. At 39 during the tournament, the final may have represented his last appearance at a FIFA World Cup, although no definitive retirement announcement had been made immediately after the match.

Whatever comes next, his international legacy remains secure after leading Argentina to Copa América success and the 2022 World Cup title.

The Biggest World Cup Yet

The 2026 tournament was the first men’s FIFA World Cup to feature 48 national teams.

Co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, the competition lasted more than a month and concluded after 104 matches across 16 host cities.

The expanded format gave more countries an opportunity to compete on football’s biggest stage and produced memorable performances from traditional powerhouses and emerging football nations.

Cape Verde, Morocco, Norway and several other teams contributed to a tournament filled with unexpected results, emotional victories and new international stars.

The competition was not without controversy. Supporters raised concerns over ticket prices, extreme summer conditions, hydration breaks, technology and some organisational decisions.

Yet the tournament also demonstrated football’s unmatched ability to capture global attention.

The final was promoted as Messi versus Yamal, but Spain’s victory was ultimately built on collective strength.
