2003
The opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP), led by Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, defeated the ruling Alliance for Democracy (AD) government of Lam Adesina, ending the belief that an incumbent party would automatically complete two terms.
2007
Adebayo Alao-Akala secured victory for the PDP, allowing the party to retain power for another four years after Ladoja's administration.
2011 to 2019
Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made history as the first governor in Oyo State to complete two consecutive terms. Despite that achievement, the APC was unable to retain power in the 2019 election.
Looking Ahead to 2027
Now, attention is turning to 2027. Governor Seyi Makinde will complete his constitutionally permitted second term, but another political milestone could be on the horizon.
If the PDP retains Oyo State and Makinde successfully backs his preferred successor, it would mark the first time since 1999 that an outgoing governor has directly produced a successor from the same political camp.
Among the names already generating discussion is Hon. Bimbo Adekanbi, although the PDP has yet to conduct its primary and other aspirants are expected to enter the race.
Whether 2027 produces another historic first will ultimately depend on party primaries, campaign dynamics, opposition strength and, most importantly, the decision of Oyo State voters at the ballot box.
