On the 19th of August 2024, Christiannah was declared missing after her parents received disturbing messages from her abductors, who shockingly used Christiannah’s own WhatsApp account to contact them. The initial message was sent at 8:49 pm, and included photos of Christiannah in captivity, shared through WhatsApp’s ‘view once’ feature. Her captors demanded a ransom of N1,500,000 to secure her release.

With desperation mounting, Christiannah’s parents were able to raise N350,000, which they transferred immediately. The abductors then directed that the money be sent to a betting account through a bank deposit, concealing the transaction’s true nature (further details of this account are being withheld pending further investigation). After receiving the partial payment, the abductors escalated their demands by requesting the bank statement of the person who sent the money, which was forwarded on the 23rd of August.

Further investigation showed that the suspect had withdrawn N100,000 from the betting account before it was frozen by the company at the request of law enforcement. Detectives began to examine the suspect’s relationship with Christiannah, noting mutual interactions on social media, including frequent comments on each other’s Instagram posts. A significant piece of evidence emerged when it was discovered that the same bank account used to launder funds from Christiannah’s account had been posted on Twitter in the past, asking for “giveaway free money” during a social media contest.
