The 2026 Ilese Day celebrations got off to an energetic start as athletes from across Ogun State lined up for the annual 18-kilometre marathon race, with defending champion Muhammed Ayomide of Ikene Local Government Area once again proving why he remains the man to beat.
Ayomide successfully defended his title after completing the demanding course in 1 hour and 8 minutes, finishing ahead of a competitive field to claim back-to-back victories in one of the highlights of the annual community festival.
His latest victory is more than just another first-place finish. It adds another remarkable chapter to a marathon journey that has seen him consistently rank among the event’s best athletes over the past four years.
Ayomide first competed in the race in 2023, where he finished second. He returned in 2024 and claimed third place, before breaking through to win the championship in 2025. Now, with his victory in 2026, he has successfully defended his crown, becoming one of the race’s most consistent performers in recent years.
