“Everything okay?” Dylan asked, noticing the look on her face.

Jess nodded, setting her phone down. “Yeah, it’s just Lily. She was worried when I didn’t come back last night.”

Dylan raised an eyebrow, a playful grin spreading across his face. “You can tell her you were with me. I’m sure she’ll understand.”

Jess laughed, a blush creeping up her cheeks. “Oh, she’ll understand, all right. She’s been trying to set us up for weeks.”

Dylan chuckled, leaning in to kiss her. “Smart girl.”

The rest of the day passed in a blur of happiness and laughter. They spent the afternoon exploring the town, wandering through the park, stopping for ice cream, enjoying each other’s company. Jess couldn’t remember the last time she had felt so free, so alive.

As the sun began to set, they made their way back to campus, walking hand in hand, the cool evening air wrapping around them. Jess felt a sense of contentment, a feeling that everything was finally falling into place.

But as they approached Jess’s dorm, a figure stepped out from the shadows, blocking their path. Jess’s heart skipped a beat as she recognized him. It was Alex, her ex-boyfriend.

“Jess,” Alex said, his voice tight, his eyes flicking to Dylan and then back to her. “Can we talk?”

Jess felt a knot of tension form in her stomach. She hadn’t spoken to Alex since their breakup, hadn’t even seen him around campus. The sight of him now, standing in front of her, brought a rush of memories, a mixture of anger and pain.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Jess said, her voice cold. She felt Dylan’s hand tighten around hers, a silent show of support.

“Please,” Alex said, his voice pleading. “Just give me five minutes.”

Dylan squeezed her hand and gave her a supportive look before stepping back, giving them space. Jess followed Alex a few steps away, her arms crossed over her chest, her expression guarded.

“What do you want, Alex?” Jess asked, her voice hard.

Alex ran a hand through his hair, his expression conflicted. “I just… I want to apologize,” he said, his voice soft. “I know I messed up, and I know I hurt you. I’ve had a lot of time to think, and I realize now how much you meant to me. I want to try again, Jess. I want us to work.”

Jess felt a wave of anger rise up, the hurt and betrayal of their breakup still fresh in her mind. “You think you can just walk back into my life and everything will be fine?” she said, her voice shaking with emotion. “You hurt me, Alex. You made me feel worthless. I’m not going through that again.”

Alex looked down, guilt and regret written all over his face. “I know,” he said, his voice breaking. “I know I don’t deserve another chance, but I love you, Jess. I never stopped.”

Jess felt a lump form in her throat, a part of her still aching from the wounds he had inflicted. But as she looked at him, she realized that the love she had once felt was gone, replaced by something stronger, something better. She thought of Dylan, of the way he made her feel, and knew where her heart truly lay.

“I’m sorry, Alex,” Jess said, her voice firm. “But I’ve moved on. I’ve found someone who makes me happy, who makes me feel loved. You and I… we’re over.”

Alex’s shoulders sagged, defeat washing over him. He nodded, his eyes filled with sadness. “I understand,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I just… I hope you find happiness, Jess. You deserve it.”

Jess watched as he turned and walked away, a sense of finality settling over her. She took a deep breath, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders, a sense of closure she hadn’t realized she needed.

She turned back to Dylan, who was watching her with a concerned expression. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice gentle.

Jess nodded, a smile spreading across her face. “Yeah,” she said, her voice light. “I’m more than okay.”
