Ijebu Ode Legislative Council Moves to Establish Scholarship Board for Indigent Students

The Ijebu Ode Local Government Legislative Council has commenced the legislative process to establish an Ijebu Ode Local Government Scholarship Board, a move aimed at expanding access to education and supporting indigent students across the local government.

The proposed Byelaw was introduced during Thursday’s plenary session by the Councilor representing Ward 8, Hon. Salami Quadri, and co-sponsored by Hon. Adebukanla Jamiu.

According to the sponsors, the legislation seeks to create a structured, transparent and sustainable scholarship scheme that will provide financial assistance to qualified indigenes of Ijebu Ode pursuing secondary, tertiary and vocational education.

If passed into law and assented to, the proposed Scholarship Board will oversee a merit-based scholarship selection process, provide educational support for financially disadvantaged students, encourage academic excellence, reduce school dropout rates caused by financial hardship, and strengthen human capital development within the local government.

Speaking on the proposed legislation, Hon. Salami Quadri described the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of Ijebu Ode, noting that education remains one of the most valuable legacies any government can provide for its people.

The Byelaw has successfully scaled its first reading and will proceed to a second reading, where members of the Legislative Council are expected to deliberate extensively on its provisions before further legislative consideration.

If eventually enacted, the Scholarship Board is expected to provide a lasting institutional framework for educational support, reinforcing the commitment of the 10th Ijebu Ode Legislative Council to youth empowerment, educational advancement and sustainable community development.
