A distinguished chemist, researcher and sustainability innovator, Dr. Popoola is at the forefront of cutting-edge research in food safety, sustainable packaging, analytical chemistry and environmental sustainability. A First-Class Foundation at FUNAAB
Dr. Popoola studied Chemistry at FUNAAB from 2012 to 2017, graduating with First Class Honours. During his undergraduate years, he also won the highly competitive Total E&S Undergraduate Scholarship, which supported his studies from his second year until graduation.
He has credited FUNAAB with shaping his scientific mindset and research philosophy, noting that its rigorous academic training, practical laboratory exposure and mentorship equipped him with the analytical and problem-solving skills that continue to drive his success today.
From Teaching to a Perfect PhD
After completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), he taught Chemistry between 2018 and 2020 before securing a fully funded graduate scholarship to Clarkson University in New York in 2021. There, he earned both a Master of Science in Chemistry and a PhD in Materials and Analytical Chemistry, finishing with an outstanding 4.0 out of 4.0 CGPA.
His doctoral research focused on developing smart and sustainable technologies to tackle food spoilage, plastic pollution and rapid food-quality assessment. His innovations include biodegradable food-packaging materials, nanocellulose-based freshness sensors, antimicrobial packaging films, 3D-printable polymer composites and portable food-testing technologies.
His research has since been published in leading international journals, including ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, Food Chemistry and Advanced Functional Materials, work that demonstrates practical solutions for improving food safety, extending shelf life and reducing dependence on conventional plastics.
Leading Research at Clarus Labs
Dr. Popoola currently serves as Associate Director of Research and Development at Clarus Labs, Mississippi, where he leads the development of rapid and portable technologies for monitoring food freshness and quality. His team is also translating complex laboratory methods into affordable field technologies, including portable assay kits, food test strips and smartphone-enabled detection platforms.
Recognition and Honours
His contributions have earned him numerous honours, including first place at the 2026 The Pitch Business Competition in Mississippi, where his team received a $10,000 prize for an innovative food-testing technology. He has also received Clarkson University's Phalanx Award of Excellence, the C. R. Shipley Jr. Endowed Fellowship Award, several American Chemical Society recognitions, and was granted United States permanent residency under the prestigious EB-1A Extraordinary Ability category.
