The countdown to the 28th Nigerian University Games (NUGA) has officially entered a new phase, with organisers marking 120 days to the opening ceremony of the highly anticipated sporting festival scheduled to take place at the University of Calabar (UNICAL).

To commemorate the milestone, the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) unveiled a countdown campaign featuring “Omon,” the official mascot of the 2026 Games. Designed as a powerful gorilla, the mascot represents strength, resilience and determination while reflecting the rich biodiversity and natural heritage of Cross River State, the host of this year’s competition.

According to NUGA, Omon also embodies the core values of university sports in Nigeria excellence, unity, discipline and sportsmanship as preparations intensify for what is expected to be one of the largest editions of the Games in recent years.

The University of Calabar is expected to welcome thousands of student-athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and supporters from universities across the country. For many participants, the Games represent more than a competition. They offer a platform to showcase talent, build lifelong friendships and compete for national recognition while representing their respective institutions.
